In 1998, the Columbia’s Historic Preservation Commission began naming properties to a Notable Properties list.
Since then, with the exception of 1999, the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) has named seven to 10 properties to the list of Notable Properties.
Properties named to the list must meet three criteria: within the city limits, 50 years old or older, and feature architectural or historical importance either through historic features, who lived there or how it was used.
As of 2010, the list included 118 Notable Properties.
